“This week’s liberty discussions have revolved around the United States’ spy agency NSA, and the fact that its employees see intercepted nude and sexual private photos as a fringe benefit of the job, passing private intercepted photos around between colleagues. This is according to a seven-hour interview with Edward Snowden by The Guardian.
Anybody who says they have nothing to hide so they have nothing to fear should have pause as facts such as these start appearing. In particular, people who dismiss the spying on civilians with an “it’s not like they see me naked” should reconsider their argumentation at this point. While there’s obviously nothing wrong with a naked body as such, this is just as obviously still a breach of confidence, integrity, and privacy of civilians.
However, it’s also not new. This started becoming known with one of the NSA’s many accomplices, the spy agency in the United Kingdom, GCHQ. It turns out that they try to intercept exactly everything that passes London and the UK, and that the GCHQ has a special program in place to intercept civilian webcam chats from Yahoo, a program called OPTIC NERVE, which is indeed some nerve. They routinely intercepted nude and even sexual private video conversations. From their own document about evaluating this program:
“It would appear that a surprising number of people use webcam conversations to show intimate parts of their body to the other person.”
NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!? And these are the geniuses we trust with keeping our countries SAFE!?”
